Through a communiqué, DASH announced today that the Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will travel to Tirana-Albania and Munich-Germany, from February 14-17.
According to DASH, Blinken's visit to Tirana will reaffirm the strength of the United States' relationship with Albania, a key partner for stability in the Western Balkans and a strong ally in supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This will be the first visit of the American secretary to Albania, since 2021 when he took the post for the direction of American diplomacy.
Last year, Secretary Blinken commented positively on Albania's role in the UN Security Council.
Antony Blinken declared in 2021 non grata in the USA the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who is currently under house arrest under the charge of passive corruption related to the affair of the former Partizani complex.
At that time, Blinken declared: "Today I am publicly declaring Sali Berisha, ex-President of Albania, ex-Prime Minister and ex-Member of Parliament, non-women due to his involvement in major corruption."
The first visit of an American secretary of state to our country was that of James Baker, in Tirana on June 22, 1991. While the second visit of another American secretary of state was that of Madeleine Albright, on February 19, 2000, where she also gave a speech in the Albanian parliament. Followed by another visit by John Kerry on February 14, 2016.
According to the statement made by DASH, during the visit to Germany, Blinken will participate in the Munich Security Conference, where he will discuss Ukraine, the Middle East and transatlantic security, DASH announced.
Blinken's attendance at the Munich conference comes after he completed his fifth tour of the Middle East to try to push forward a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
