The Minister of the Interior, Taulant Balla, admitted that many persons wanted by Albanian justice live in Dubai.
In the show "Opinion", Balla announced a possible agreement with Dubai for the penetration of persons with criminal records in Albania.
"Operation "Rule of Law" was designed to follow all wanted persons and don't forget that in Tirana we have over 1 thousand wanted persons and for this purpose we have initiated this national operation which will last. There are 70 people who have been found and arrested and while the thing that comes to us as the first conclusion is that most of them are not in Albania. People with higher risk and those who are documented by court decisions, a certain number are found in Dubai, a number in different countries of Europe are hidden under other names. The "Bajri" case was that there you used fake documents and thanks to the work with the French Police and a new cooperation with Interpol", said Balla.
Blendi Fevziu: Have you talked about extradition for those in Dubai?
"Dubai for me is a challenge in terms of impunity. I had a conversation in Tirana and Lyon with the General Secretary of Interpol. I will be by the end of January to meet with the highest authorities of the Emirates on this matter. There are also instruments that can be used that include deportation. This is a difficult area to negotiate, but not impossible. We have a list of people who live in Dubai. For a long time there have been efforts by Albanian institutions because the extradition process follows a different path. That's why I spoke about another way. What we need is a culture of impunity. Neither I nor the general director should be replaced until we bring them to justice" , he continued.
Blendi Fevziu: Where is the difference between extradition and deportation?
"I am trying to highlight the bridge and that is Interpol, and for this purpose we have started discussions with Interpol to build together with them a special program for the deportation of these persons. It is enough for Interpol Dubai to stop one of these people and take this person to the Dubai airport, to penetrate beyond the border, i.e. passport control, and from that moment, that person can be taken by us and brought to Albania", concluded Balla .
