Prime Minister Edi Rama has declared that the upcoming elections constitute the most historic moment for the country since 1992, describing them as a rare opportunity to advance the European integration process.
From Saranda, the prime minister stressed that the door to the European Union has been opened for Albania, but it will not remain open forever. He described this as an unprecedented opportunity that must be seized responsibly, noting that the EU has set a three-year deadline for concluding negotiations — a privilege that has not been granted to any other country before.
Referring to history, Rama mentioned the European dream of Albanians since the time of Skanderbeg and the Renaissance, saying that this is a heritage that should not be betrayed. He stated that we have often attributed the mistakes of the past to foreigners, but in reality the responsibility has been the Albanians themselves.
" You know very well, every time we were ready, when it came to the 27 heads of state, even though we were ready, one came out, then another and they refused us the negotiations. Finally we convinced them, and they opened the negotiations. But what Albanians need to understand about that meeting with history, is that they gave us an opportunity that they have not given to anyone else. A deadline to close the negotiations for 3 years, no other country has done so in so long and has not been given this deadline. The black mark that the owl had left us in Europe. And I felt it in my meetings, where they could not wait for me to leave. No one counted Albania then as they count it today. What should not happen is that the door is not closed and therefore we must strictly adhere to the deadline that they have set, and that they cannot change since they have set it. But if they waver, they will be harsh. So let's show them that we will do it "The process is on schedule ," Rama said.
