Berisha withdraws from boycott of reforms after debates at group meeting...

Internal debates in the Democratic Party about boycotting the Territorial and Electoral Reform committees have ended with an important turn: opposition MPs have forced Sali Berisha to resign, deciding that the DP will participate in the parliamentary processes for both reforms.

Luciano Boçi, co-chair of the Territorial Reform Commission, stated that after discussions in the small leadership, the DP will continue to be part of the commissions. “ We are not boycotting the commission. We will announce the readiness of the DP group to co-operate with this important reform. In the parliamentary group, we discuss in a democratic manner; there were thoughts of abandoning it, but the most important Commission is the Mandates Commission. There must be a consensual exit, otherwise the process would be predetermined ,” said Boçi.

MP Bledjon Nallbati also came out against Berisha's line, arguing that boycotting important committees is against the interest of citizens. " We are like the movie 'Two times mat, both ice cream and chocolate'. We go to parliament, we do not go to the two most important committees. We should go to reveal our option to the citizens and then, if necessary, decide on strikes or other measures. It is not right to boycott only reforms ," said Nallbati.

MP Tritan Shehu also stressed that boycotting is not the solution at a time when the majority has closed every door to the opposition. " None of us wants a boycott, in conditions when the majority has closed every door and parliamentarism requires us to take extreme positions. It is up to the leadership to decide ," said Shehu.

Eno Bozdo added that the participation of the DP is necessary to present the views and challenge the reforms of the SP. " That they will do whatever they want, this is clear, but we must use our participation to correct their mistakes. We have the expertise and arguments to challenge the reform. If they refuse and continue stubbornly, then we can withdraw ," Bozdo declared.

After these tense discussions, the DP leadership decided that the party would return to the parliamentary committees on territorial and electoral reforms, avoiding a boycott that would weaken the opposition's position and its influence in the decision-making process.

Debates in the group meeting

Eno Bozdo: That they will do what they want, we have this clear, but we must use our participation to 'tear up' the reform that they have done so far. We have all the arguments and the best expertise to reject what they have done. The second, and most important, is the model that we propose. This issue has the attention of the public and the international community. Then, at a certain moment, if they refuse and stubbornly continue, we can withdraw.

Ina Zhupa: We should not leave the space empty in the Territorial Reform Commission. Regardless of whether they listen to us or not, we go for the citizens and the public interest. To be there for the hearings with experts, to provide our solutions, so that the citizens can hear us on how we want the territorial reform to serve them. They will find it more difficult to oppose us, because they have no arguments, but they will find it very easy to get by without us, because they say: 'You were not there', and that's how they are comfortable. I have asked the citizens of my areas and they tell me: participate. I also invite you to do a survey; you will find that they say: participate. We do not have the votes, but we have our voice there and this will resonate with both citizens and internationals, making concrete proposals. We must be multidimensional: we must hold protests, we must be present in reforms, we must analyze, and we must have elections. We are a party with human and intellectual capacities; We don't have to follow just one path and abandon the others.

Tritan Shehu: None of us want a boycott, given the conditions when the majority has closed every door, and in these conditions of parliamentarism you are forced to take extreme positions.

Bledjon Nallbati: We have become like the movie 'Twice Mat', both ice cream and chocolate. We go to parliament, we do not go to the two most important committees. If we go with the idea that Edi Rama does not give us anything, it is better not to go to parliament at all. We must go there to explain our option to the citizens, then, if we choose the boycott option, to boycott everything, to go on strike, to greater escalations. It is not right to go to other committees and not to reforms; we must share our minds.  /Pamphlet
