Democratic Party MP Tritan Shehu has accused Prime Minister Edi Rama and the government of a lack of response to the situation of Albanian citizens in the Middle East, at a time when tensions in the region have escalated following the attacks on Iran.
In a reaction published on social media, Shehu states that the Albanian government has not taken any concrete steps to help or repatriate Albanians who are in the conflict zone. According to him, the request to discuss this issue in the Foreign Affairs Committee has also not been accepted by the majority.
The Democratic MP emphasizes that, according to information he has received, there are over 3,000 Albanians in that region, about 2,000 of them residents for studies or professional activities, while about 1,000 are tourists.
Shehu adds that Albanian institutions have not provided public information about the situation and, according to him, there has been no communication with the families of citizens in the conflict zone. He demands that the government take immediate measures, including issuing a decision for their repatriation, activating the Crisis Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an inter-institutional task force, and approving the necessary funds by the Council of Ministers for the implementation of evacuation operations.
"Albanian citizens abandoned by the Government in the middle of the war in the Middle East. He is the only prime minister, the only government in Europe, that has left the Albanians, who are in that area, without any support."
It does not even inform the public here about this very important issue. No one comes to discuss the problem and the measures in Parliament… This majority did not accept that this issue be discussed in the Foreign Affairs Committee, after I requested this action. According to indirect information, there are currently over 3000 Albanian citizens in that area.
About 2000 are residents for studies, professional activities, etc. About 1000 are tourists. There are men, women and children, entire families, all in difficulty. While this regime only talks about the measures that the governments of those countries have taken against stranded foreigners.
Nothing directly done by the Albanian state, which has neither contacted the vast majority there nor knows where they are; there is no official database. No communication between our institutions and their families. No intergovernmental structure has been set up for this humanitarian emergency. Only the declaration that evacuation is impossible.
This is also a lie! Italy evacuated several hundred of its citizens by air yesterday. Because Italy, which has about 10,000 citizens in that area, is working and trying for them.
The Crisis Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been activated, delegates have been sent to the field, the public is being communicated and informed. Italian ministers report daily to the Chamber, Senate, committees and the public.
This is happening to other European countries as well. Only in Albania is there silence, inactivity, and indifference towards its citizens.
The possible private trip from there to Tirana costs 10,000–15,000 euros per person, because the state does nothing to organize the evacuation.
This is complete abandonment, leaving Albanians at the mercy of fate!
Meanwhile, the situation created there requires: A decision by the Council of Ministers for urgent repatriation measures. Activation of the Crisis Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an inter-institutional task force. Approval of the relevant funds by the Council of Ministers for these operations," writes Shehu.
