Democratic deputy, Jorida Tabaku, believes that the May 11 elections will be decided by the economy and by the perception that citizens have about prices, the cost of living, salaries and pensions. In this context, the democratic deputy states that in the remaining 4 months before the elections, attention will be focused on these issues.
Tabaku points out that after 11 years, pensioners are the segment of society that faces the most difficulties.
"55% has been the accumulative increase in prices in these 11 years, at a time when the increase in pensions was 23%, indexation in fact; which means half the price increase. Pensions are in real decline, apart from the fact that pensioners have increased by 300,000", said Tabaku.
According to Tabaku, the bonus of the end of last year and that of spring is for electoral purposes and does not help pensioners to live better.
"I consider these constituencies ugly. When you discuss about an Albania that has opened negotiations, when you talk about closing all the gaps that exist between Albania and the countries of the Western Balkans and those of Europe, and you buy the vote of pensioners. Albania is behind the countries of the Western Balkans in the average salary, in the public sector salary, in per capita income but also in pensions. And all these elements are issues of living standards that the government has failed to meet in 11 years and has no electoral payment to meet," she emphasized in a television interview.
Jorida Tabaku explains that the electoral program of the Democratic Party envisages not only measures such as the establishment of a living minimum of 200 euros, the increase of pensions and salaries, but also aid for business and the establishment of a flat tax at the level of 10%. According to Tabak, the time has come for Albania to have a fiscal code.
"The removal of all exceptional laws, the removal of all fiscal exemptions, the removal of all custom laws, I think that establishes a justice in the tax system and that stimulates the economy", declared Tabaku.
Despite the programs for the economy or even promises for higher salaries and pensions, the Democratic Party has recorded 6 defeats in the electoral battlegrounds in front of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Socialist Party, and it remains to be seen what the opposition will do to reverse the result in the 4 months of next.
