What Tirana should learn from the meeting of the two czars in Alaska

Diplomacy as a duel, not as a solution: if two predators talk, no one else decides...

In a scathing analysis for Corriere della Sera, former constitutional judge and prominent Italian intellectual Sabino Cassese describes the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump as a confrontation between two "modern tsars," more interested in strategic dominance than in a just solution for Ukraine.

He describes the meeting in Alaska not as an act of classical diplomacy, but as a confrontation between two predators who see diplomacy as a means of personal victory, not as a path to international stability.

"Here we were not dealing with diplomacy, but with a duel between two leaders who talk about peace while making geopolitical calculations," Cassese writes.

The meeting, held without cameras and with few interpreters, according to the author, does not serve transparency, but is part of a tactic to keep agreements and intentions secret.

Putin benefits from this situation where Trump is more interested in showcasing diplomatic success to the American electorate, while Russia itself seeks to revive its global image as a negotiating superpower.

Meanwhile, Ukraine, the real victim of the conflict, remains off the table. Europeans are also seen more as spectators than active actors.

Cassese raises the important question: Can there really be peace when there is talk without the participation of those who suffer from war?

This analysis is a signal for Balkan countries, especially Albania and Kosovo, to understand that international diplomacy is often played like chess at closed tables, where the winner is not the one who has the right, but the one who has the power.

In this reality, Tirana must strengthen its position in transatlantic forums and maintain its pro-Ukrainian stance, not simply out of moral solidarity, but to prevent the return of the Russian model of dominance in the Western Balkans./ Pamphlet
