The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has reacted to the proposal of the SP parliamentary group for legal changes to the Criminal Procedure Code.
The proposal bears the signatures of Prime Minister Edi Rama, the chairman of the Laws Committee, Ulsi Manja, and the chairman of the SP group, Taulant Balla.
Berisha says that this proposal seriously violates the rule of law and places the government above the law undertaken by Prime Minister Edi Rama.
According to Berisha, through this amendment, Rama and his ministers aim to avoid investigations and protect themselves from legal liability. He claimed that the message being given to citizens is that high-ranking officials “stand above the law” and cannot be investigated. Berisha described this as a serious blow to citizens’ aspirations and a protection of the corruption system.
"This is the most serious, most criminal, most humiliating act against Albanian citizens that Edi Rama dares to take. Edi Rama tells Albanians that he personally and his criminal organization, the ministers, are above the law, they are above everything else and cannot be investigated, we have stolen from you and we will steal from you. This is the morality and truth of this amendment. This is the most serious blow they deal to the aspirations of Albanian citizens and the rule of law. It is the most powerful defense against the corruption system. After the cancellation of this function of the Special Prosecution by law, prosecutors have nothing left but immunity, but immunity is in Rama's hands. I warn him that he will pay the highest price and that he is proving to Albanians and voters what a thief he is. How this man, caught red-handed with corrupt affairs, himself, the Baxhanak, his wife and his entourage will now make the law to steal as much as he can and not suspend him. Suspension is "legal right recognized by the law," said Berisha.
