The Chairman of the DP, Sali Berisha, present at the 'Speech' held in Lezha, which coincides with the 35th anniversary of the founding of this branch of the DP, admitted that he has made mistakes, but according to him, he has not given up on his values.

According to him, the Democratic Party, over the years, has shown unwavering loyalty to democracy and its values.

"As is inevitable, we made our mistakes, but we continued to defend the values we believe in," Berisha said, among other things.

Excerpt from the speech of the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha:

A heartfelt greeting to all of you here and an immense gratitude to you and all the citizens of the Lezha district for the extraordinary support you have given to the Democratic Party.

Our gratitude is boundless, our respect is greater than ever for you.

Dear friends, today we gather on a date, the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic Party, and therefore I must bow with the greatest respect to those boys and girls, the boys and girls of this district who 35 years ago, under conditions of true communist terror, with determination and courage, founded the Democratic Party here in Lezha, established political pluralism, divided the eras, overthrew the most inhumane system that Albanians had experienced in their entire history, the communist system, and opened the doors of freedom and democracy in this district and throughout Albania.

The greatest honor for them.

We celebrate this 35th anniversary, of course, with the highest sense of responsibility for the obligations we have.

This analysis of these 35 years, for each of us, every democrat, should serve first and foremost as a responsibility, as a new burden for the great mission, the new mission that we have.

In the 90s, we, as people, had no knowledge of what a democratic order was, but freedom was an inner spiritual aspiration for us, but not something we experienced, the system and values of democracy were completely unknown to us, we courageously overturned the order and built the system of our ideals and aspirations, a free Albania, free and dignified citizens, freedom of belief, freedom of property, free initiative, an Albania open to friends and aligned on the right side of history, an Albania of a Western vocation, its integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions.

So, people who, without any kind of practice like us, accomplished very great things.

We fully justified that great effort made by Albanians and we, as the DP, with our program, created the market economy.

With our program, we created the institutions of democracy.

As is inevitable, we made our mistakes, but we continued to defend the values we believe in.

We, after recognizing our mistake, made the most just legal solution, we addressed the problems that had arisen in the most just, honest way.

We did not accept to consciously commit immoral acts, to take the money of those who had not invested a single penny in pyramid schemes and give it to those who had lost it, no, we followed moral standards, regardless of the price we might pay.

And again, Albanians appreciated this.

Albanians saw in us a political force with morals.

A political force that left its chair, appeared in public trial, took responsibility, but remained honest in its morals.

He did not deceive the citizens.

Remember, my rival told the citizens we would return every penny.

I said I can't pay back a single penny because a debt that wasn't taken on can never be recognized.

Your government had not taken on that debt. That was the truth.

At the end of four years, Albanians voted overwhelmingly for the Democratic Party.

They voted for her despite the mistakes she made, but they voted for the principle she showed, for the courage she showed.

She rose like a Phoenix from the ashes and won the 2001 parliamentary elections, which Albanians know how they were robbed of with the Dushku phenomena, etc., etc.

Again we stood, we brought power to its knees, we defended the vote, we became the most confident, most determined defenders of the Albanian vote.

It has never happened that those who observed the elections wrote in their report that we changed the report after the opposition brought irrefutable evidence.

The report changed, the elections were marred.

In fact, we stripped the government of its legitimacy.

And just as we are the Democratic Party of Values, determined on our path to achieving our goals through democratic means, we continued the battle and won in a plebiscite in 2005.

Years of governance, which brought changes that Albania has never had.

They brought fundamental changes.

Albania, from the depths of misery and poverty that was, perhaps for centuries, in the group of lowest-income countries, rose to the group of upper-middle-income countries.

Albanians, for the first time in their history, were the highest paid people in salaries and pensions in the region.

The infrastructure was transformed.

The country joined NATO.

Education took on a different look.

Albania took confident steps towards EU integration.

And in 2013, we lost the elections, accepted the rotation, and went into opposition, showing unwavering loyalty to democracy and its values.
