Edi Rama continues to show that he is not doing well with the Americans and it seems that he has now started to set his sights on Trump's enemies.
After the mockery he made in Macron's presence, yesterday Edi Rama decided to play with fire again. While presenting a wind farm in Tropoja, Rama winked at the Chinese.
" If Albania were not so potentially important, the Chinese, who are the oldest civilization and the most indisputable traders, would not have set their sights on it and would not consider Albania as their 'honeymoon spot ,'" Babloku said. But this is an open challenge to the US. For months, the US Embassy in Tirana has been sending clear messages about the risks posed by investments from countries like China, especially in strategic sectors and infrastructure.
On November 24, 2025, VanHorn stated: “ An investment screening mechanism is a legal tool that allows governments to review foreign investments to ensure they do not pose risks to national security… Such an environment is fair and predictable for American companies .”
In November 2024, she emphasized again: " Let's avoid investments that are not in line with Albanian interests or that pose risks. Join EU countries that have mechanisms for verifying investments ."
Instead of building this line requested by strategic partners, Rama decides to publicly promote China as a power "hungry for trade" and valued as a partner by the "smartest traders."
This diplomatic behavior does not come in a vacuum. Edi Rama has not received any congratulations from the US for his victory in the last elections, no official visit to Washington since the Trump administration, and no invitations for high-level bilateral engagements.
On the other hand, the “McGonigal” dossier is still active in the US – and its connections go directly to China. In June 2017, during a dinner with Duçka, McGonigal revealed the investigations into the China Energy Fund Committee.
The reaction also comes at a time when Jared Kushner appears to be backing out of the Sazan investment. The procedures have stalled and Rama's attempts to approach Trump's son-in-law are likely failing.
The other element is that justice is hitting the government from all sides and under the rug there is talk that the US may be involved. It is even said that SPAK will go all the way to the head of the government.
