Tirana is hosting the EU-Western Balkans Investment Forum today, with the participation of leaders from the Western Balkans and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the Investment Forum held in Tirana, focused on Albania's membership in SEPA.
Von der Leyen said that a year ago she came to Albania with the pledge that the citizens of the Western Balkans would experience the EU in their daily lives. And this, according to Von der Leyen, is happening, while an example brought the reduction of fees for money transfers through SEPA.
Von der Leyen emphasized that SEPA will save foreign companies around 500 million euros per year. This is real progress, not just on paper, Von der Leyen said.
"A year ago I came to Albania, with a commitment that the citizens of the Western Balkans would start to experience the EU in their daily lives and that you would feel the benefits of moving forward together. After a year, this is what happened. I remember very well, when you told me from the beginning that you wanted Albania to become part of the SEOA. In less than two years you made it a reality. Since last week, companies in Albania can send money to the EU and receive money at extremely low costs. And the ambassador told me that he tested the system on October 6, he wanted to send money from Brussels to Tirana, while the money took 3-4 days to arrive in Tirana at a cost of 80 euros. On October 8, when you became part of SEPA, the transfer was made within a few minutes and at no cost. The same thing is happening in Montenegro and North Macedonia. The fees were 6 times higher, SEPA membership will save companies nearly 500 million euros per year "Foreign, this is real money on your balance sheets. This is exactly what it means to experience the EU on the European continent in everyday life. It is progress not only on paper, but in reality. Thanks to the hard work of leaders like you Edi, this change is happening here and now, this is an example," said Von der Leyen.
