The appeal of the GJKKO has left in force the security measure "prison arrest" for the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj. The latter had requested release from prison in exchange for a financial guarantee, but this request was rejected by the Appeal.
Veliaj has been in Durrës prison since February 10, being investigated by SPAK for passive corruption in 9 episodes and money laundering. He was arrested by order of the Special Prosecution Office and has since requested release from detention several times, without success.
Today's hearing at the Appeals Court came after the appeal of the April 23 decision, when Judge Erion Bani decided to continue the security measure, accepting SPAK's periodic report on the progress of the investigations.
In parallel, the mayor has also filed a recourse with the Supreme Court against the security measure, but a hearing date or a panel that will review the case has not yet been set.
