The decision of the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to invite the President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, to an informal dinner of the leaders of the Western Balkans in Athens instead of Prime Minister Edi Rama has highlighted the tense relations between the two neighbors in the case of Fredi Beleri.
The Greek newspaper "Ekathimerini", which reported the news, wrote that diplomatic sources of the government in Athens have affirmed that the decision of the Greek Prime Minister is a diplomatic way to show "not only Rama, but also other leaders of the Western Balkans, that Greece does not negotiate on issues - which according to it - are principled".
Meanwhile, official Tirana, represented by president Bajram Begaj, has rejected Mitsotakis' invitation, with the reason that he has a defined agenda.
Yesterday evening, the spokesperson of the Greek government, Pavlos Marinakis, also reacted and confirmed that the missing invitation to Prime Minister Edi Rama at the dinner called by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was a consequence of the positions on the case of Fredi Beleri.
He emphasized that Albania must respect the basic rules of the rule of law and that Greece will not take any steps behind.
"The Greek government, with a series of interventions by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, is coordinated with the rule of law, not only with Fredi Beleri, a legally elected mayor, who must be sworn in. "Albania must respect the basic rules of the rule of law and we will not take a single step backwards for this," he said.
