The wife of the prime minister, Edi Rama, does not seem to share the same opinion with him when it comes to the economic situation in the country. The Prime Minister boasts of increasing wages and has tried to minimize the introduction of dirty money into the economy.
But a report published by UNDP (United Nations Development Program) says the opposite. The authors of this report are: Linda Rama and Elena Polo. So the prime minister's wife.
In this report, it is emphasized that Albania has problems with corruption, criminal money, business climate, etc. " The shadow economy in Albania is large and the informal economic activity constitutes about 27% of the GDP, where a third of the country's workers are in the informal sector (more than half is included in the agricultural sector). In general, informality is driven by a weak institutional and regulatory environment, insufficient capacity of public authorities, corruption and low awareness of its negative social implications. Widespread informality undermines competition, hinders the efficient distribution of state and private resources and reduces tax revenues and the financing of social security systems ", it is emphasized in the report entitled "Assessment of Development Finance in Albania".
Further, there are criticisms regarding the business climate. " Albania ranks low in the region for almost every area of doing business assessed, especially in "dealing with building permits", "property registration", "paying taxes", "enforcing contracts" and "solving bankruptcy ". Corruption is perceived as more problematic for Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina compared to other countries in the region. However, the Competitiveness Index ranks Albania third in the region, after Serbia and North Macedonia ", it continues.
But the strongest blow has come to the prime minister over illegal money. There are many reports that say that drug money enters Albania and it seems that Rama's wife is on the same line.
" Illegal financial flows constitute an important challenge for Albania, especially in terms of the erosive effect on private financial resources, their integration into the financial system, the connection with the large informal economy and the undermining of the state, democracy and public institutions. According to 2020 estimates, illegal financial flows make up a fifth of the Albanian economy ," the report says.
