Former Socialist Minister Arben Malaj has stated that he is considering the possibility of running in next year's local elections for the Municipality of Vlora, while simultaneously distancing himself from Prime Minister Edi Rama.
In a statement to "News 24", Malaj stated that he will never be a candidate supported by Rama, criticizing his way of leading.
"I will never be a candidate for any position from Edi Rama, because his model of prime ministerial monarchy has become a heavy cost for citizens," he declared.
Malaj accused the prime minister of the way he has treated local leaders in Vlora.
"Mr. Rama has been quarrelsome with the four mayors of Vlora and has forced them to either do as he says, or their careers will be cut short," he said, also mentioning the cases of former mayors.
He also raised concerns about the pressure on the public administration. "What happened with the municipal administration... that all 24 resigned immediately, means that it is a mentality problem," Malaj said.
According to him, staying in power through pressure and intimidation of dissent is not an indicator of success.
"Staying in power by violating different opinions, by intimidating those who have been elected, this is not a fact to be happy about," Malaj emphasized.
"Mr. Rama has been quarrelsome with all 4 mayors of Vlora and has despised them and forced them to either do as he says or have their careers cut short, as he did with Dritan Leli who did not resign or with Ermal Dredha who resigned from his post.
Second, what happened with the municipal administration, which is part of the public administration and is protected by law, that he threatened them, we know, and what he said in a closed-door meeting, that all 24 of them resigned immediately means that it is a mentality problem. So, staying in power by violating different opinions, by intimidating those who were elected, this is not a fact to be happy about being in the third or fourth term.
I am very clear, I have demands, I am testing them, when I make a decision I will communicate it. I ran in 1992 and won in the first round, in 2013 as an independent, with the slogan "The City of Independence Deserves an Independent Candidate", the SP structures of Vlora know how many votes they stole.
"I have said that I will never be a candidate for any position from Edi Rama because his model of the prime ministerial kingdom has become a heavy cost for citizens and I cannot be the "Mira" bear that gathers citizens," Malaj said in his full speech.
