In a process where the only candidate was Sali Berisha, the leader of the Democratic Party managed to defeat… Berisha with 98% of the votes. However, even in the unopposed “race”, there were no shortage of votes against, abstentions and debates about participation, while critics within the Democrats described the process as a formal referendum with no real alternative.
The Democratic Party closed the vote count in the process where the only candidate was Sali Berisha. In the end, the historic leader of the Democrats managed to win convincingly against… himself.
According to preliminary data published by the Blue House, the total number of votes is 39,441. The total number of valid votes is 38,902, while 539 votes were invalid. Of the valid votes, 37,341 were in favor of Berisha, 1,055 against and 506 abstained.
The final result also produced the biggest political irony of the day: Sali Berisha, 35 years in politics and over three decades at the head of the Albanian right, defeated Berisha with nearly 98% of the vote.
But beyond the triumph on paper, the process was accompanied by many question marks.
Former Democratic MP Ervin Salianji published much lower figures from the main branches of the Democratic Party during the day, claiming that by 6:00 p.m. only 3,885 people had voted in the main districts. He accused the Democratic Party leaders of inflating and manipulating the figures, while calling the process “a farce for usurping the party.”
Doubts were further heightened after voting hours in some DP branches were postponed until 7:00 PM, even though there was only one candidate and turnout in many areas was significantly lower than the official membership.
In branch 8 in Tirana, out of 1,741 members with the right to vote, only 665 people participated. In Vlora, out of about 1,600 members, nearly 700 voted. In Selenica, 157 out of 270 members participated, while in many other areas, participation remained far from the figures that the Democratic Party once produced.
In some branches, there was no shortage of votes against Berisha, even though only his name was on the ballot. In Gramsh, 22 Democrats voted against. In Saranda, 40 votes were cast against him, while in Gjirokastër, 11 Democrats refused to support him.
But the strongest indicator of today's crisis seems to be the dramatic shrinkage of the Democratic Party itself.
From the over 100,000 members that the DP declared in 2013, today the blue headquarters officially accepts around 50,000 members. So, in a decade, the party has halved.
And the political irony remains strong: while oppositions in the region, such as in Serbia, are filling the squares with protests and new political figures, the Democratic Party of Albania closed a process where the historical leader competed alone, against himself, in a party with half of its former membership. / Pamphlet
