Gazment Bardhi, head of the DP Parliamentary Group, responded to Prime Minister Edi Rama, who did not hesitate to label opposition lawmakers holding meetings in Berlin and Brussels as "cuckoo exiles", who, according to him, are attempting to hinder EU integration.
Bardhi, in his reaction, states that the obstacles to Albania's European integration are directly related to the current government and majority.
"The three-day visit to Berlin made us even more aware of where the problems lie, of what the obstacles are for Albania in the integration process. Unfortunately, 100% of the obstacles, 100% of the problems are caused by the government and the current ruling majority," Bardhi said in a video message from Berlin.
Referring to the meetings in Berlin, Bardhi said that the focus was on the need for the real implementation of European standards and guaranteeing a political process that relies on free elections and functional institutions.
"Therefore, today we must all come together to guarantee free and fair elections and a responsible government that works for the public interest and for the integration of Albania," he emphasized.
During the visit to Berlin, the Albanian opposition delegation, led by the Chairman of the DP Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, held a series of meetings with German personalities influential in the integration process of Albania, including the Minister of State for Europe, Günther Krichbaum; the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Armin Laschet; the rapporteur for Albania in the Bundestag, Peter Beyer; the Chairman of the Committee for Europe, Anton Hofreiter; the Deputy Chairman of the CDU Parliamentary Group in the Bundestag, Patricia Lips; and the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, Mechthild Heil.
The delegation also held meetings with MPs Knut Abraham, Tilman Kuban and Jürgen Hardt, who are involved in European and enlargement policy issues in the Bundestag, as well as with the Director of the Department for the Western Balkans at the German Federal Foreign Office, Niels von Redecker.
In today's meeting with Minister for Europe Krichbaum, opposition MPs expressed to the senior Federal Government official their gratitude for the support that Germany is providing to Albania's European integration, in a process that is based on merit and the achievement of standards.
"EU integration is not propaganda, but standards and merit. And today, these standards are being violated by Edi Rama. Equality before the law is being violated and corruption is being politically defended," they said during the meeting.
