The head of the DP Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, has exploded after Prime Minister Edi Rama's speech at the meeting with Socialist Party MPs.
Bardhi stated that he believes Rama when he says that the changes to the Criminal Procedure Code are not to protect his ministers. According to him, the changes are intended to protect the Prime Minister himself from a possible suspension from office in the event of an investigation by SPAK.
He emphasized that Rama is proposing that the Prime Minister not be suspended from office even if the justice authorities assess that there is a risk of evidence being tampered with during a criminal investigation.
Bardhi stated that he also believes Rama when he says that he has rejected Belinda Balluku's resignation three times. According to him, the rejection is not related to protecting the Deputy Prime Minister, but to avoiding a political precedent that could later affect the Prime Minister himself.
He described the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code, in the context of an active criminal investigation against the government's number two, as a move that looks beyond the specific case. According to Bardhi, the amendments are designed for future situations, if justice will raise higher responsibilities in the government hierarchy.
In his statement, Bardhi also mentioned the McGonigal case, which remains under investigation, as well as the investigations into incinerators, linking these to the need that, according to him, Rama has to ensure institutional protection.
In the end, Bardhi stated that legal procedures cannot replace political responsibility and that, according to him, cases under investigation are not closed with procedural changes.
