The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro, has announced new legal measures regarding waste mismanagement.
At an event on the Integrated Waste Treatment Reform that was presented by Edi Rama, Kumbaro emphasized the importance of proper waste management as one of Albania's main challenges in meeting European standards.
She added that, in her opinion, waste mismanagement should be punishable by imprisonment, however, the sanctions that will be applied will be moderate and in line with the requirements and measures of the European Union.
"Waste mismanagement is punishable by imprisonment, but it's based on these European measures, so the sanctions won't be too harsh."
"Not only municipalities, even this national operator that we are creating, it is very important that businesses, those that distribute goods, also have the obligation to track every waste. A law has been provided for this and this is not an easy law," said the minister.
Kumbaro emphasized that there will also be a transitional period for the increase in legal obligations towards various entities.
The Minister mentioned four main categories of waste that require special attention: packaging, electrical appliances, and batteries, which pose a serious risk to the environment due to the pollution they cause.
Following the national plan, Kumbaro stressed the importance of improving waste management infrastructure at regional levels. She mentioned the administrative areas where investments are being made for the construction of landfills and transfer stations, including Shkodra-Lezha, Kukës, Dibra, Tirana-Durrës, Fier, Berat, Korça, Vlora, Gjirokastra, as well as the northern and southern divisions of Vlora.
The Minister also spoke about a series of new investments. In conclusion, Kumbaro emphasized that in addition to improving infrastructure, intensive work must be done to raise awareness among citizens and reduce the volume of waste that ends up in landfills, describing this as one of the main challenges for Albania's environmental future and the path towards European integration.
