Interior Minister Albana Koçiu has clarified the Tirana Police statement regarding the opposition protest, announced to take place today at 6:00 PM in front of the Prime Minister's Office.
In a press conference, Koçiu confirmed that the Police did not approve the Democratic Party's request to hold the rally, linking this decision to the procedures followed after previous incidents.
The Minister emphasized that regardless of the formal status of the rally, law enforcement structures will be on the ground to guarantee public safety and intervene in case of violations of the law. She underlined that any illegal actions during the protest will be handled according to the relevant procedures by the competent authorities.
"We have said that protests are a constitutional right to protest peacefully. Regarding the fact that the police did not approve the development of today's protest, this is a procedure that is related to the two previous protests. On the other hand, the right to protest is everyone's and the police have a duty to maintain order.
"Whether it is a protest with permission or without permission, anyone who commits an act that is punishable by law is subject to other bodies that classify the act. This does not affect the fact that we have a protest with permission or without permission," said Koçiu.
Today, the Tirana Police announced that, based on the risk analysis and the events recorded in past protests where masked individuals threw Molotov cocktails and pyrotechnics, causing injuries to officers, they will not take responsibility for the rally. However, the authorities have announced that they will take measures to guarantee order and security, and have warned of temporary blockages of several main axes in the center of Tirana.
