The Albanian government has made available over 5.4 million euros, or about 520 million lekë, for the purchase of a property in London that will serve as the new headquarters of the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in the United Kingdom.
This move comes just a few days after Prime Minister Edi Rama admitted that Albania is a failure in diplomatic service.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is like Albanian Television, it is another great failure of ours. I told you, I have told you and I am telling you that it is not something we do not know, it is not an institution in function of all these challenges. It is not. Why? Because it has never been reformed. Even a law that was made as a reform, was not a reform, it was "toilet", that is, makeup. And we do not have a diplomatic service today that is up to the great challenges that the world and Albania have. So the law must be such that it paves the way for reform, paves the way for introducing fresh air, for introducing new people," Rama said.
The process will be carried out by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Embassy in London, which will select the most suitable building and land for diplomatic and consular activity. The properties to be considered must be secure, free of legal problems and provide sufficient space for the functioning of the diplomatic institution.
The evaluation of the bids will be carried out by a Special Commission, including representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Innovation, the Directorate of Government Services, the National Authority for the Security of Classified Information and the State Attorney's Office. This commission will review the proposals, follow the negotiations and select the winning bid.
After signing the purchase contract, the Embassy will make payments and register the property according to British law, while the funds will be covered by the budget of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
