Meloni comments on the decision of EU ministers...
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has commented on the new reform of the immigration system in the European Union, which was approved this week by the Interior Ministers of the member states and which, among other things, paves the legal way for the full implementation of the Italy-Albania agreement on migrant centers outside EU territory.
In her speech during the International Conference of the Global Alliance Against Migrant Smuggling, Meloni emphasized: " Italy has proposed innovative solutions that are increasingly being seen with interest and are becoming common practice.
I refer above all to the Protocol with Albania. The management of asylum requests and returns outside the EU, but under European jurisdiction, this is the model that is already part of the common path that Europe is following .
The agreement reached in the EU includes a reduced list of seven countries that could be considered “safe countries” for the return of migrants: Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco and Tunisia. This list is much shorter than the one initially proposed by Italy (with 22 countries), but represents a compromise that reopens the door to return policies outside the EU’s borders.
In the past, the European Court of Justice had blocked the accelerated deportation mechanism due to the lack of clear criteria for determining the “safety” of a third country. The new agreement sets new standards for assessing safety, including guaranteeing the fundamental rights of returned migrants.
Under the new regulation, an asylum application can be declared inadmissible if the person has had the opportunity to seek protection in a safe third country, without the EU having to examine the substance of the application. This allows for swift rejections for migrants coming from these countries.
Italy sees this as the official green light for centers outside the EU, like the model introduced with Albania. According to Rome, the centers in Albania now have the opportunity to fully function for the purpose for which they were built. /Pamphlet
