DP MP Jorida Tabaku has reacted after Prime Minister Edi Rama's verbal attack on journalist Klodiana Lala.
Lala criticized the government for the floods and incinerators, and according to the legislator, the prime minister reacted a few days later, ironically.
Tabaku said that Rama's behavior is not a coincidence. Further, the Democratic MP called for the protection of journalists with articles in the Criminal Code, as "journalists are the voice of the public and closing society's ears means killing the truth," she said.
"Attacks on journalists are not a debate. They are an escape from accountability. When the Prime Minister bullies journalists for asking about government corruption, the problem is not the questions. The problem is the government that has lost its composure because it has no answers."
This behavior is not a coincidence. International data confirms that the degradation of media freedom in Albania is systematic. The more the noose of justice tightens around the government, the more aggressive the language becomes towards the media.
For this reason, any proposed change to the Criminal Code to protect journalists and free speech is only the minimum. Because these require an accountable political culture that we do not have today; a culture that accepts debate and not arrogance; a culture that respects different opinions and does not attack them! Democracy is not weakened by difficult questions. It dies from the silence imposed by power. Journalists are the voice of the public. Attacking them means closing the ears of society from hearing the truth", said Tabaku.
