Niko Peleshi was elected by Prime Minister Edi Rama as the new Speaker of the Parliament for the fourth governing mandate.
In his statement to the media after the SP Assembly, Peleshi said that he only learned about this proposal today and that it is a great responsibility.
"I am coming from the leadership of the group, I was the chairman of the Parliamentary Group, I have had several ministerial portfolios, I have had a long experience. I am not saying that I am the only one who deserved it, many, many of my colleagues could probably do it better than me. It was proposed today by the party chairman that I be the Speaker of the Assembly, I accept it with great pleasure, humility and a lot of responsibility. I am telling you that I have just found out today that I will be in that position. It is a very big responsibility, starting from the historical moment where the country is on its journey towards the European Union", said Peleshi, among other things.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has called for the reorganization and reform of several institutions, including the Parliament, in the next 4 years for Albania 2030.
The Prime Minister said that the Assembly should have fewer deputies.
"Elisa, Niko, Taulanti with Majlinda, Ardea and several other MPs were tasked with drafting a project for the construction of new parliamentary committees. They have analyzed the progress, structure and program of the assembly over the years. They have also assessed the need to harmonize the structure of the Assembly with the structure of the negotiation process. I would like to defend some opinions in advance. First, in more than 3 decades, we need a new cycle of reform and reorganization for several institutions, including the Assembly of Albania. The excess number of MPs. Reducing the number of MPs in the Assembly to at least 101 MPs, even fewer, would only have a positive impact. Therefore, this change should be our objective that coincides with the will of our voters", said Rama.
