Rama reports to Mitsotakis about Beleri, the Greek Prime Minister's threats
Rama-Mitsotakis meeting

Prime Minister Edi Rama has given an account to his Greek counterpart on the arrest of Fredi Beleri. Although it is a matter of justice and Albania is a sovereign state, Tirana's policy "bows down" to Athens.

Rama held a meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the NATO summit in Lithuania. The Greek media write that the meeting was requested by Mitsotakis, who asked Rama to release Fredi Beleri as soon as possible. Like his ministers, Mitsotakis has also said that Albania is violating the rule of law. As for Rama, the positions are not known, but it seems clear that Athens continues to threaten EU integration. For Mitsotakis, a just state of law is a condition for integration.

Fredi Beleri was arrested a few days before May 14, after he was caught buying votes. Athina reacted immediately, claiming that the arrest was political, given that Rama had attacked her during the campaign. But despite the pressures, SPAK and the court remained steadfast, as Beleri was left in prison at both levels. The prosecution claims that there is sufficient evidence implicating him in vote buying. Beleri won the elections, but has not taken the oath yet because he is in prison.

Meanwhile, Athens has always been attentive and has not spared the attacks. Mitsotakis himself issued threats earlier.

During a press conference after the end of a summit in Brussels earlier this month, Mitsotakis sent a stern message to Tirana, saying he had informed his counterparts about the case.

" I had the opportunity to inform my counterparts about what is happening today in Albania in the case of the elected mayor of Himara and to express my disappointment and indignation at the fact that an elected mayor is actually arrested two days after his election and is in prison, for us, with dubious procedural provisions ," Mitsotakis said.

The Greek Prime Minister describes the Beleri case as " a blow to the rule of law and Albania's efforts to respect the European acquis ", while he says that this will be an element of the Greek assessment of Albania's European path. According to the Greek media, the same today he also took a stand with Rama.
