Prime Minister Edi Rama attacked the opposition for its stance towards Belinda Balluku, stating that political opponents are demanding her punishment without waiting for the court process.
Speaking to Socialist MPs, Rama said that Balluk is being put on a public trial in the media and in politics, while emphasizing that the presumption of innocence is not being taken into account in this debate. He also made a comparison with the fate of her grandfather during the communist regime.
"They want Balluk in prison even before the court door opens, I want to ask them a question, where do we Albanians of today, regardless of our human and political convictions and sympathies, differ from those who yesterday wanted her grandfather shot. After initially holding their trial in the media and condemning them in the name of the people without giving them the right to defend themselves in the eyes of the people. This is not a question I am asking today to defend Balluk, because I am not anyone's lawyer in the face of an accusation raised by the prosecution, but to defend the great truth of justice because I am the prime minister of this country. The great truth is called the presumption of innocence, as an absolute prerequisite of every investigation and process and as a sharp dividing line between justice and arbitrariness", he said.
