Fierce clashes between Athens and Tirana are coming back regarding the arrest of Fredi Beleri. Although Prime Minister Edi Rama was gentle these days and tried to calm relations with the Greeks, today the debate has worsened.
Rama said yesterday in the Greek media that Fredi Beleri's oath belongs to justice, but today the Greek Foreign Minister reacted strongly, saying that Beleri is being held in prison because of political will. But this has not been accepted by the Albanian government. Official Tirana reacted strongly to his statement, demanding that laws and court decisions be respected.
Through a post on the Twitter social network, Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka states that the Albanian justice bodies have spoken about the Beler case and that the calls of the Greek minister are in vain.
She added that Beler was judged based on Albanian laws and that based on them, there is no political will to get Beler out of prison, or to put a notary in prison for him to take the oath as mayor.
" There is no way that our Greek friends & neighbors are the only ones who are right, when they insist on a request dismissed by the Albanian courts and clear to other friends and partners, who say that this is a matter of Albanian justice !
The new Albanian justice bodies have spoken clearly with their decisions and the Albanian government has also spoken clearly: The issue of the oath of the mayor banned by justice is a matter of justice. Not the Albanian government. Nor the Greek government.
I told my Greek counterpart, for whom I have a lot of respect, that this issue should not be based on Greek law but on Albanian law.
And according to Albanian law, there is no political will to get Mr. Beleri out of prison or to put a notary in prison for him to take the oath as mayor. Unfortunately, this is so and only so ", writes Xhaçka.
Fredi Beleri was arrested for buying votes and Greece has only been applying pressure for 3 months. For several months, Tirana did not react. The silence was broken by the prime minister, who appeared in a press conference and was seen to be very soft-spoken. Also, he has spoken in the Greek media, where it seems more like he has been justified. But it seems that today the institutional clashes have returned.
