Rama has said that Blair has been his inspiration in politics.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, present at the World Governance Summit panel on the role of technology in addressing current challenges, stated that Tony Blair was the reason why he had become prime minister.
" I want to correct something. I want to tell the audience that I will neither be prime minister nor a person engaged in front of him. I wouldn't be more privileged than that, as he is the main reason why I became prime minister. We came out of a very long terr. We were isolated from the world. We were told that we were a full communist country. You can change the system within years, but not the institutions. With technology, you can make a leap in the future, which is something ," said Rama.
During his speech, Blair said that Albania is taking extraordinary steps forward as he added that Prime Minister Rama is focused on the technological revolution.
Tony Blair: A 19th century state was a minimalist state, it didn't do much for people, it didn't generate income. While the state of the 20th century grew and became an extraordinary apparatus, especially in developed nations with large amounts of money, but today it is not working effectively. The question for this century is, can we reimagine the state through technology and build 21st century states that provide much better services at a lower cost? This is the challenge and there is no one better to discuss this than the prime minister of Albania, Edi Rama. Albania is a country that in the 80's and early 90's was left behind by the world, while during these years it has made extraordinary steps forward. The GDP has grown tremendously during these 10 or so years and Edi as prime minister is focused on the technological revolution. The title of our panel is: Is technology the solution? How big is this technological revolution and how hard is it for political leaders to keep pace with it?
Edi Rama: I would neither be prime minister nor a person engaged in politics if it wasn't for him and before I knew him he was my inspiration in politics and to believe that politics can be a third way to the left. We came out of a very long terr. We were isolated from the world, we were told that we were the only communist country. We were alone in a poverty that today I cannot imagine how it could be. When we enter the era of building institutions, what we learned is that you can change the system within days, but you cannot build institutions even for years. I don't know how many decades or centuries it would take. With technology you can make a leap into the future, which is something that until the development of innovation would have been unimaginable.
