The former British Prime Minister, David Cameron, currently Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in the government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, will visit Tirana today.
Cameron will be received around 11:00 in the morning by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Igli Hasani at the "Mother Teresa" International Airport. At around 12:00, the reception and meeting with the head of the Albanian government, Edi Rama, at the Prime Minister's Office is planned, where they will then hold a media conference together. In this 1-day visit, the British secretary will also meet the head of state, Bajram Begaj, at 2:30 p.m.
According to the British embassy in Tirana, the chief diplomat Cameron will announce a new program to fight corruption and organized crime in Albania. He plans to declare a new attack on organized criminal gangs, which are behind the smuggling networks with Albanians, which still continue to aim for illegal passage to Great Britain, the embassy's announcement states, among other things.
This visit comes a few days after a phone call that Prime Minister Edi Rama held with his British counterpart Rishi Sunak. The embassy announces that Cameron will present a plan related to the judiciary to tackle corruption and organized crime in Albania.
"As part of the UK's growing leadership to find solutions to the pan-European challenge, the British Foreign Secretary will travel to Albania this week to meet with the Albanian President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to discuss cooperation between Albania and Great Britain, for the control of illegal immigration on the front line. The British Foreign Secretary will highlight the success of our innovative partnership to tackle human traffickers and illegal immigration and the impact of UK investment in preventing immigration. The Foreign Secretary will build on the UK's leadership in tackling organized crime by announcing a new program linked to the judiciary to tackle corruption and organized crime in Albania, as well as providing UK expertise to Albanian Police, for their reform agenda", announces the British embassy.
A major topic of discussion will be continued efforts to curb illegal immigration. Almost two years ago, Albania and Great Britain reached an agreement for the immediate return of illegal Albanian immigrants from Great Britain. This visit underscores the continued commitment to this agreement and the broader effort to manage and reduce illegal immigration. Cameron is expected to announce a new program aimed at fighting corruption and organized crime within Albania's judicial system. This initiative will benefit both countries by increasing judicial integrity and reducing criminal activities that have international consequences.
Lord David Cameron's visit to Tirana on May 22 marks an important step in the ongoing partnership between Albania and Great Britain. Meetings with Albanian leaders will focus on critical issues such as illegal immigration, judicial reform and law enforcement support, reinforcing both countries' commitment to cooperation and mutual benefit.
While it is expected that today the foreign secretary of Britain, James Cameron, will arrive in Tirana on an official visit, the preparations for his reception have also started. A portrait of Cameron with the inscription "Welcome Lord Cameron" has been placed in the building of the Polytechnic University, in Mother Teresa Square. British flags have also been placed along the boulevard as a sign of welcome for the Foreign Secretary.
