The preliminary hearing for the "Meta" case, which was to be held today, has been postponed to December 5. It is learned that the hearing was postponed after the lawyer requested to familiarize himself with the file documents.
The President of the Freedom Party has hired another defense attorney, Gylsen Zhllima. Ilir Meta was present at today's hearing. He was arrested on October 21, 2024. Meta and MP Monika Kryemadhi are suspected of having used their state and political positions in collaboration with other state officials.
According to the charges, they are suspected of favoring private companies and other activities with lobbying in the US and buying and selling homes in exchange for receiving significant sums of money, which they tried to hide.
Meta is accused of the criminal offenses of "passive corruption", "money laundering" and "hiding assets". SPAK closed the investigation on July 28, and sent the file for trial at the end of August.
The GJKKO will decide whether or not to proceed with the case for trial. We recall that earlier, the hearings were postponed due to lawyers' requests for the exclusion of Judge Irena Gjoka from the case with the argument that she has a conflict of interest as she is being investigated by SPAK for the accusations previously raised by Sali Berisha that she concealed a conviction for document forgery in Greece.
Meta's lawyer also claimed that SPAK violated the procedure by presenting new evidence regarding LSI lobbying in the US, at a time when the investigations into the file had been closed since July.
