Collen Hyland is expected to take over as US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, replacing Alexander Kasanof in this position.
The news was announced by the Al Jazeera network, which reports that Kasanof will no longer be Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans.
Hyland has so far led the Directorate for Central and Southern European Affairs.
Hyland is an experienced career diplomat who has worked in US diplomatic missions in Baghdad, Kabul, and Pristina.
In Kosovo, she held the position of Deputy Ambassador in the period 2016-2019.
She also speaks Albanian.
Kasanof was appointed in July 2024 to the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary, replacing Gabriel Escobar.
Colleen Hyland visited Albania in September 2024, where she met with SPAK leader Altin Dumani. Referring to this meeting, Hyland reiterated the United States' full support for SPAK and Albania's independent institutions, emphasizing the crucial role of justice reform in advancing Albania's path toward its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
In an interview with Voice of America in 2024, she emphasized that "Albania wants to attract foreign investment and to achieve this, it must change its behavior and attitude, it must address this problem."
" Albania has made excellent progress thanks to SPAK, which is an organization that has done an extraordinary job. Polls show that SPAK has earned the respect of the country's citizens because it helps the country address corruption issues ," Hyland said.
SPAK, according to her, must be preserved and strengthened in order to send a very strong signal to foreign investors and Albanians to invest in their country, while the US is ready to further assist Albania on its path to European integration.
" In this difficult work, corruption must be kept under control. Laws must be updated and brought into line with EU standards, and this requires focus and determination," said Ms. Hyland.
She stressed that Albania must work hard to achieve the standards to join the EU, and from the US side, every support goes towards this integration, as well as for other countries in the region. “The US sees the future of this region nowhere else than in joining the EU ,” Hyland added. /Pamphlet/
