Former Democratic MP Ervin Salianji has reacted to the tragedy that occurred in Durrës, when a drunk driver fatally hit two children and seriously injured another.
In a post on social media, he expresses condolences for the lives lost and says that the state is being challenged every day by the strong, endangering people's lives.
"This is not a random accident. It is the consequence of a society that every day becomes more powerless to react. On highways, on city streets, on white lines, on pedestrian crossings, the 'strong' defy the law and endanger the lives of citizens. Silence towards them is complicity, tolerance is degradation, it is shame," declared Salianji.
He expressed harsh criticism of institutions and the state, saying that "the state is strong with the weak and bows down to the strong. It punishes the ordinary citizen, but turns a blind eye when the law is violated by those who feel superior to it or who are worth a handful of votes."
Salianji stressed the need for more than superficial legal changes.
"We need law enforcement, equality before the law, real punishment for those who drive drunk and repeat the crime. We need accountability for those who design and build unsafe roads and sidewalks. We need standards on the streets, in the city, in every public space. We need prevention, because punishment after a tragedy does not bring back the lives lost," says the former MP.
The MP concluded by expressing his most sincere condolences to the affected families and praying for the recovery of the child who is fighting for his life.
