Today, the first meeting of the Peace Board is taking place in Washington, a new international structure led by US President Donald Trump, created to oversee Gaza in the post-war period and issues related to its stabilization.
Over 45 countries are expected to participate in the meeting. The European Union is represented by a commissioner as an observer. Prime Minister Edi Rama will also be present, who a day earlier left for Washington after President Trump's invitation to participate in the official establishment of the Board and the launch of its activities, where Albania is a founding member.
The agenda includes issues such as the disarmament of Hamas, determining the size of the fund for the reconstruction of Gaza, and the manner of distributing humanitarian aid to the population affected by the war.
President Trump has stated that participating countries have pledged $5 billion to the enclave's reconstruction fund, while it is estimated that the financial needs are much higher. The meeting is taking place at the facility known as the "Donald J. Trump US Institute of Peace", and aims to serve as a platform for discussion on a broader peace plan.
In addition to the countries that will contribute financially, several countries will be engaged with troops on the ground as part of the Gaza stabilization force, which will deal with training police forces, administering the territory and disarming the militant group.
This first meeting is not attended by countries such as France, Great Britain, Russia, China and the Vatican, which has declined the invitation. The first challenge of the Peace Board is expected to be the reconstruction of Gaza under the conditions of a fragile ceasefire, accompanied by continuous violations.
