Trump-Putin in Alaska: The meeting of the century between "listening

Why the August 15 summit could rewrite Ukraine's political map and challenge the international order...

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a face-to-face meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, considered one of the most controversial events in international diplomacy this year.

According to official White House sources, this summit has been described as a "listening exercise", a listening process where Trump aims to closely understand Putin's ideas and proposals on key issues of world politics, with particular emphasis on the war in Ukraine.

The selection of Alaska is not accidental.

The city of Anchorage, and specifically the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson military base, was chosen for logistical, security, and symbolic reasons.

Its geographical proximity to Russian territory, its position away from international political centers, and the fact that the United States is not part of the International Criminal Court, makes Alaska a "neutral" country in the legal sense for a sanctioned and wanted leader like Putin.

The meeting's topic is focused on the possibility of a ceasefire or peace agreement for Ukraine, but criticism is strong that Kiev will not be represented in this round of negotiations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to Trump, will be invited to a future meeting, but in the meantime, any talk that touches on Ukraine's sovereignty and territory without its presence is seen as a dangerous precedent.

Voices from Western media, including the Financial Times and The Guardian, warn that a hasty agreement between Trump and Putin could be one-sided and disadvantageous to the Ukrainian side, legitimizing border changes by force.

This summit, held on the eve of the redistribution of influence in the international arena, will test the Trump administration's ability to balance a new relationship with Russia without undermining its commitments to NATO allies and to the principles of the international order.

For Albania and the Balkans, such developments are of particular importance, as any change in the US-Russia balance is directly reflected in regional security and the geopolitical pressure coming from the East. This meeting will be closely followed by world diplomacy, not only for the result it may produce, but also for the message it sends on the way superpowers address conflicts and sanctions in the 21st century./ Pamphlet
