"Illiteracy" in Albania, even according to PISA data, is at dramatic levels. Such a concern was also raised by Prime Minister Edi Rama during the podcast "Flasim", where Natasha Shuteriqi Poroçani, the granddaughter of the Elbasan writer and publicist Dhimtër Shuteriqi, who is a researcher and lecturer at the Department of the Albanian Language in Durrës, was invited.
The elimination of the special letters of the Albanian language, ë and ç, has become a problem, and for Prime Minister Rama, anyone who does not know how to write Albanian grammar should not be awarded a university degree.
The Albanian language, according to the Prime Minister, should continue at all levels of study.
"Now the deforming virus has entered phones, the abbreviation. The first victim of the Albanian language, not today, but the first since the computer came into being, is ë and ç. I remember when I went to the Ministry of Culture and they imposed a fine for letters without ë and I wouldn't sign any letter without the letter ë. It's a disaster.
We brought the language back to high school because they had completely removed it. I have said before that the Albanian language should remain until the end of the faculty. Whoever does not speak Albanian and whoever does not write Albanian should not receive a diploma at all. That is what I have said. But what is said and done, there is a whole sea in between", says Rama.
Prime Minister Rama further raised the alarm that the Albanian language will be impoverished and lost if measures are not taken.
"I think that anything we do for the language should be taken seriously, because it will impoverish us and we will lose it to unimaginable proportions and constitute losses that cannot be reversed. I am a supporter of any kind of this nature," Rama said.
