A few days after Kosovo's president, Vjosa Osmani, expressed her ambitions for a second term, her re-election for another five years at the head of the country depends on domestic politics.
According to political analysts, Osmani has played an important role in affirming and representing Kosovo in the international arena, but her re-election as president will depend on political calculations.
According to them, Osmani must first secure the support of LVV leader Albin Kurti, whose party convincingly won the December 28 elections.
The mandate of President Vjosa Osmani ends on April 4, 2026. According to the Constitution of Kosovo, a new president must be elected no later than 30 days before the end of the current president's mandate, which means by March 4, 2026.
University professor Mazllum Baraliu emphasizes for KosovaPress that Osmani deserves another five-year mandate. He believes that the president has played an important role in affirming and representing Kosovo in the international arena over the last five years, therefore she should be supported by the deputies in the tenth legislature.
" She deserves another mandate and the moment is for her to be supported by MPs and not for the opposite to happen, regardless of the fact that any other consensual candidate that may be sought by the opposition, with all due respect, cannot replace the role that she can now have after five years of experience and her successful testimony in affirming Kosovo like Ms. Osmani. It would be in the best interest of Kosovo for her to receive another mandate ," he says.
Meanwhile, political analyst Dorajet Imeri underlines that the decision to re-elect Osmani will not depend only on her performance and reputation, but mainly on domestic politics.
He tells KosovaPress that Osmani's re-election will depend mainly on the Vetëvendosje Movement and the incumbent Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, whose party has won 57 MPs in the Assembly and is expected to form the new government together with non-Serb communities.
" As for Ms. Osmani and her potential re-election, given that she has just declared her willingness to run for president once again, it depends on many factors, but the main one remains the LVV and its leader Albin Kurti. All of this may be within the framework of future expectations, which will depend exclusively on the positions and vision that this political entity will have in the coming days ," he emphasizes.
Analyzing Osmani's five-year career, Professor Baraliu says that Osmani has worthily represented Kosovo in the international arena. He even attributes the main merits to him for securing four new recognitions over the past year.
" Taken on the ground with all the eventual ups and downs that can be described by various factors and groups in Kosovar society, whether she was worthy or not (of the position of president). But I am deeply convinced and if we judge fairly and impartially in the interest of the republic, she has made an extraordinary affirmation of Kosovo in international circles with her activity. She is the person who, not only in Kosovo, compared to other leaders, but also with the acting prime minister and others, has previously had visits all over the world and met the most important people. She has affirmed and represented foreign policy, for which she is competent by the constitution in the most worthy and successful way. We have four recognitions and one main merit, and the greatest is that of the president of the country ", adds Baraliu.
Otherwise, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, in an interview with KosovaPress, said that they have seen the president's statement, but first there are three steps forward, which is the formation of the Assembly and the Government, as well as the approval of the budget, and that one cannot talk about the fourth step without passing those three.
Kurti said that it is important to sit down with President Osmani and discuss all things, as they have 61 votes but not 80, which is also affecting the passage of international agreements.
A majority of eighty votes in the Assembly is required to elect the president in the first two rounds. If this is not achieved, then in the third round the president can be elected with 61 votes. Otherwise, the country will go to new early elections.
Based on the preliminary results of the CEC for the December 28 elections, the Vetëvendosje Movement has won 51.11% or 486,994 votes. Behind it, is the Democratic Party of Kosovo, which has 20.19% or 192,407 votes. Third is the Democratic League of Kosovo with 13.23% or 126,102 votes. The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo with 5.50% or 52,370 votes.
Based on this result, LVV will have 57 deputies, PDK 22 deputies, LDK 15 deputies, AAK 6 deputies, and non-majority communities 20 deputies. / KosovaPress
