The former director of the Kosovo Insurance Bureau, Sami Mazreku, long denounced by "Pamfleti" for corruption affairs, has been arrested along with the former director of Finance at the BKS, Valon Berisha.
Both of them are suspected of having lent money worth thousands of euros to various citizens in the name of insurance.
Mazreku and Berisha were arrested in the action being carried out by the Economic Crimes Unit of the Kosovo Police with the Basic Prosecution Office in Prizren.
The operation began in the early hours of the morning and was led by eight prosecutors, under the leadership of the Chief Prosecutor of Prizren, Petrit Kryeziu.
The list of suspects includes 45 citizens, as well as the Executive Director of the BKS and the Director of Finance. They are suspected of obtaining illegal benefits through abuse of official position and breach of trust.
According to the suspicions of the investigation, the main role in the damage allegedly caused to the BKS budget, worth over 1 million euros, was played by two former senior officials of this bureau: Sami Mazreku, former executive director, and Valon Berisha, former director of Finance.
Investigations show that the suspects obtained the details of 45 bank accounts of citizens, through which financial means were transferred from BKS, based on pre-prepared agreements. From these transactions, Mazreku and Berisha are suspected of having benefited from thousands of euros.
They also allegedly identified citizens involved in traffic accidents, to whom money was transferred under the pretext of compensation for damages. Agreements were reached with these individuals, according to which a small portion of the funds was left to the citizens, while the majority of the transferred amounts allegedly ended up with the two former BKS officials.
As part of this operation, the Prizren Prosecution Office has launched numerous raids on the properties of former directors of the Kosovo Insurance Bureau.
The raids include the properties of Sami Mazreku and at least one other former BKS official.
The main suspicions of this operation are related to possible manipulations in the damage compensation process, while investigations are still ongoing.
