The United States of America and Kosovo have signed today an agreement for the exchange and storage of classified information, which was evaluated as a historic achievement by the American ambassador in Pristina, Jeffrey Hovenier.
The US-Kosovo agreement on security measures for the protection of classified information was signed by the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and Ambassador Hovenier, after two years of work on it, the American Embassy in Pristina announced on August 24.
"This agreement lays the foundation for the exchange of classified information. It represents the strong commitment of the United States to ongoing security cooperation with Kosovo," said Hovenier.
Through this agreement, according to the American Embassy, the United States and Kosovo have undertaken obligations to protect each other's classified information, paving the way for their exchange.
From this agreement, Kosovo will benefit in several areas, including increasing the capabilities to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity through the exchange of information with the US, full integration into the Euro-Atlantic security structures, as well as the development of successful transformation of the Kosovo Security Force into a successful territorial defense force, multi-ethnic and operating like NATO, according to the US Embassy.
This agreement comes at the right time, according to Ambassador Hovenier, especially in the broader context of the ongoing war by Russian President Vladimir Putin's aggressor against Ukraine.
"In short, this agreement reflects our commitment to shared goals and values, and to a future that is more secure for both of our countries," said Hovenier.
