The presence of KFOR in Kosovo has not welcomed Pristina's pact with Ankara to buy the "Bayraktar TB-2" drone very well.
Through a communique, KFOR have declared that they have the main authority for the airspace over Kosovo. So, Kosovo cannot use them without coordinating with the NATO mission.
" Regarding the use of all categories of drones and related restrictions, including the Bayraktar TB-2, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999, the Kosovo Force Commander (KFOR) has the main authority for the airspace over Kosovo ", the communiqué states.
KFOR clarifies that Kosovo's airspace can only be used to fly over Kosovo from one country to another through commercial flights.
" The upper airspace of Kosovo can only be used to fly over Kosovo from one country to another through commercial flights; the lower airspace can be used for specific needs, case by case and according to the previous authorization by the KFOR commander. We expect the institutions in Kosovo to ensure coordination and respect the existing procedures ", the statement emphasizes.
KFOR says it continues to support the development of the Kosovo Security Forces according to their initial mandate.
" We support the KSF for civil defense operations such as firefighting, disposal of explosive devices, search and rescue and response to spills of hazardous materials ," the statement concludes.
