War crimes in Kosovo, Special Prosecution indicts former prison guard
Kosovo Special Prosecution Office

The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office has submitted to the Basic Court in Pristina an indictment for crimes against a woman who, in 1998-99, was a guard at the Pristina Prison, in the parallel prison in Lipjan.

According to the announcement, the accused NC, as a guard in the women's prison in Lipjan, together with other prison officials, "violated the rules of international law during the armed conflict, namely wartime."

The Special Prosecution Office accuses NC of "systematically mistreating Albanian prisoners, threatening them with death and torturing them inhumanely with various means, such as rubber batons, kicks and punches, to the point of fainting, causing them bodily injuries."

As a result of these actions, the Prosecution said, the victims have suffered psychological violence, a state of anxiety and fear, and their human dignity has been seriously violated.

Recently, justice authorities in Kosovo have filed a series of indictments for war crimes, Radio Free Europe reports.

Last December, the Special Prosecution Office filed an indictment in absentia against 21 people for the killing of civilians in Reçak, Shtime. Meanwhile, earlier in 2025, another indictment was filed in absentia against 21 people for the forcible expulsion of over 800,000 Albanian civilians from Kosovo during the war.

During the war in Kosovo, from 1998 to 1999, over 13,000 civilians were killed, while thousands more disappeared.

More than 1,500 people are still missing, most of them Albanians.

Hundreds of murdered Kosovo Albanians have been found in mass graves in Serbia. Their bodies were moved by Serbian forces in an attempt to cover up the crimes.

Serbia's political and military leaders have been arrested, tried and convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague for crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo.

Among them was former Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic, who died in prison without being convicted for his responsibility in ordering war crimes in Kosovo.
