Closing statements by the defense for Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi continue at the Specialist Chambers in The Hague on Friday. The trial has entered its fifth day.
A day earlier, Kadri Veseli's defense concluded its presentation. His lawyer requested his release, arguing that the Prosecution has not presented any evidence or witnesses linking him to the charges. According to the defense, the claim that the KLA communiqués were based on information provided by Veseli in his capacity as head of the intelligence service is unfounded.
In the afternoon, Rexhep Selim's defense began its closing arguments. Attorney Geoffrey Roberts stated that his client is not criminally responsible and disputed the existence of a Joint Criminal Enterprise, as presented by the Prosecution. He also questioned the credibility of witnesses called by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office and argued that Selim's activities were related to the liberation struggle, not to power-seeking purposes.
Hashim Thaçi's defense closed its presentation earlier, contesting the charges and warning of legal consequences if convicted. On the other hand, the Prosecution has requested that all four defendants be sentenced to 45 years in prison.
After the closing statements are completed, the case will be referred to the panel for a decision. The judges have three months to announce their decision or request an extension of the deadline.
