The Kosovo Assembly has adopted a resolution in support of former KLA leaders who are being tried in The Hague.
90 MPs voted in favor, one against and there were no abstentions. The MP from the Vetëvendosje Movement, Fatos Geci, voted against.
The Democratic League of Kosovo did not participate in the vote. This party requested the inclusion of an additional point in the text of the resolution, but the proposer, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, opposed the change. The Serbian List left the hall before the vote.
The resolution calls on the Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor's Office to ensure that the trial of former KLA leaders is conducted in accordance with European standards for a fair and impartial trial.
The text emphasizes the need to respect the Constitution of Kosovo, the European Convention on Human Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
The Role of the Ombudsperson and Funding
The Resolution requires the Ombudsperson at the Specialist Chambers to exercise powers to address potential violations during the judicial process.
The Assembly also calls on countries that finance the Special Court to ensure that the funds support an institution that implements European standards of justice and to demand accountability for maintaining the independence and integrity of the process.
With the adoption of this resolution, the Assembly formalized its political stance in relation to the judicial process taking place in The Hague.
