KFOR: Dialogue, the only way to reduce tensions in the north of Kosovo

NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, said that dialogue mediated by the European Union is the only way to achieve "long-term and irreversible stability and to reduce tensions in northern Kosovo."

KFOR also said that it welcomes the efforts of the international community to return Kosovo and Serbia to the dialogue for the normalization of relations.

"We invite all parties to come together to de-escalate the situation and refrain from provocative actions that are against the interest of all people in Kosovo", it was said in the announcement of KFOR.

This mission said that it is continuing contacts and coordination with all local and international interlocutors, including representatives of Kosovo institutions, the EU Mission for the Rule of Law (EULEX), with the United Nations mission, UNMIK, with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and with the Serbian Ministry of Defense.

"KFOR continues to be alert and fully capable of fulfilling its mandate deriving from UN resolution 1244 to provide environment and freedom of movement for all communities in Kosovo," KFOR announced  .

Last week, the prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandër Vucic, held separate meetings with the European mediators of the dialogue. But the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that these meetings did not bring results.

Tensions in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, started on May 26, when the new Albanian mayors of Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, entered the municipal buildings under the escort of the Kosovo Police.

The Serbs objected to this and have since been holding protests demanding the withdrawal of new mayors and special police units.

The international community presented Kurti with three demands: calming the situation in the north, holding new elections in the four northern municipalities and returning to the dialogue for the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations.

Meanwhile, Belgrade has been asked to ensure that Serbs participate unconditionally in the eventual local elections.

Kurti has presented a five-point plan that also foresees the holding of new elections, but to hold them, he said that the rule of law is needed./REL
