Kosovo, a small country but with a big heart, celebrates the 16th anniversary of Independence today.
The Declaration of Independence was made on February 17, 2008 in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo in Pristina.
In an extraordinary meeting, attended by 109 out of a total of 120 deputies, the Assembly of Kosovo unanimously declared Kosovo an independent, sovereign and democratic state. The state of Kosovo has already been recognized by 117 states, where the last state that has recognized independence is Israel.
Today, 16 years ago, Kosovo, the youngest country in Europe, declared independence from Serbia, becoming a sovereign state, with independent institutions and unique state symbols in the Western Balkans.
16 years after independence, Kosovo continues to face major challenges, both external and internal, such as unemployment, poverty, energy instability, low wages, and the flight of young people and professionals from the country.
Among the external challenges, Kosovo continues to face fragile diplomacy since the coming to power of the Government of Albin Kurti, lack of new recognitions, problems with dialogue and, as a result, the cooling of relations with Kosovo's biggest strategic partner, the States of United States of America.
On the 15th anniversary of the declaration of the state, facing international justice, behind bars are also the people who declared the state independent and fought for its liberation. The former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, are in The Hague awaiting the start of the judicial process.
