Visa liberalization empties Kosovo, about 30% of citizens are expected to

28 percent of Kosovo's citizens over the age of 18 plan to emigrate in the first half of 2024. The age group under 24 is the most likely category to emigrate. However, from 2012 to 2022, over 338 thousand citizens have emigrated from Kosovo.

Based on a survey carried out in December of last year, the GAP Institute has estimated that 28 percent of Kosovo's citizens will emigrate in the first part of 2024, after the liberalization of visas, and that most of them are destined for Germany.

According to the report entitled "Tendency to emigrate from Kosovo after visa liberalization: Impact on the workforce", the sectors that will be most affected by the departure of workers are construction, gastronomy, trade and production.

"The sectors that are expected to be most affected by the departure of employees in the short and medium term are those of the construction sector (18.7%), hotel and gastronomy (18.7%), trade (18.1%) and production (12.9%) . The same are among the sectors with the highest number of employees and where employee productivity is high, but where wages continue to remain low".

In the report, among other things, it is said that an increase in wages is expected in these sectors compared to other sectors, as during the past year they noticed that there was a change in wages in the labor market in Kosovo, where about 27.4% of the employees surveyed said that they have had salary increases.

According to the respondents, economic reasons are the cause of the decision to emigrate, as their destinations are Germany with 71.4%, followed by Switzerland with 11.7%; and Austria with 5.3%.

"About 45% of the respondents, in 2023, were employed with regular jobs (39.3% employed in the private sector and 5.8% in the public sector). Economic reasons turn out to be dominant in making the decision to emigrate. Over 20% of people who plan to emigrate have realized income in the last month of 301-450 euros, while 32.9% have not realized any income at all. The majority of citizens who plan to emigrate are people who have only completed secondary education (57.7%)", the report states.

In this report, GAP announced that from 2012 to 2022, over 338,000 citizens have emigrated from Kosovo./ Monitor
