Lista Serbe, the largest political entity of Kosovo Serbs, criticized on Friday the decision of the government in Pristina to declare two Serbian entities as terrorist organizations, an action that they say is aimed at escalating the situation in northern Kosovo.
On Thursday, the government of Kosovo declared the "Civil Defense" and "Northern Brigade" terrorist organizations, two groups that, according to the security institutions, carry out threatening activities for the constitutional order of Kosovo, in the northern part of the country, with residents mainly of the Serbian minority.
The Serbian List said that these organizations are non-existent, stressing that the "Northern Brigade" is a virtual organization that exists only in the head of Prime Minister Albin Kurti, while "Civil Defense" has been integrated into Kosovo's institutions for many years.
" In order to prevent the Kurti regime from making new provocations and accusing the Serbs or some new virtual organization of them, giving themselves justification for the persecution and intimidation of the Serbs, we ask KFOR and EULEX to to urgently deploy their forces at all points in the north ", the reaction says.
The abolition of such structures and their integration into Kosovo's institutions was foreseen by a 2015 agreement between Pristina and Belgrade in the framework of talks mediated by the European Union, but the authorities in Kosovo say that they have continued to function despite the agreement.
The Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosovo Xhelal Sveçla said on Thursday that the authorities have accurate information that members of these two organizations have committed numerous terrorist acts in the north.
A spokesperson for the US Department of State told Voice of America on Thursday that the government of Kosovo has not coordinated with the United States and other international partners for this decision, adding that for such a step the government should have coordinated with the partners closest internationals, including those who have the main responsibility for ensuring the stability of Kosovo.
The State Department calls on Kosovo to refrain from unilateral steps while working with all parties to resolve the current crisis.
Asked by journalists, the Foreign Minister of Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, did not comment on the lack of coordination with the United States for Thursday's decision, but emphasized that the decision has a legal basis.
"The legal basis is there and we think that no terrorist organization of any kind of ethnic origin, or any kind of criminal composition, should be allowed to operate in the Republic of Kosovo. we are committed to the rule of law in every corner of the country, and there is no place for organizations that terrorize the citizens and institutions of the Republic ," she said.
The decision of the Kosovo government to declare two Serbian entities in the north as terrorist organizations was taken at a time of high tensions between Kosovo and Serbia which began at the end of May when the authorities started implementing the results of the elections of April 23, boycotted by Serbian political parties. In the northern municipalities, groups of Serbian citizens continue to oppose the placement of Albanian mayors in the municipal offices. The protests ended with violence on May 29, which left dozens of KFOR members injured.
In the statement of the spokesperson of the Department of State, it is stated that the United States considers unacceptable and condemns the violence against the KFOR troops, as well as demands that the perpetrators of the violence be brought to justice, based on a fair legal and transparent process. / VOA
