The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has commemorated the massacre of the Upper Abri of Drenas, on its 26th anniversary.
Kurti, through a post on Facebook, says that this massacre is one of the cruelest crimes of the Serbian genocide in Kosovo, and so far no one has been punished.
"We do not forget the fallen on the difficult path to liberation. We honor their memory by committing to the strengthening of our Republic. Glory to all those who fell for the freedom of Kosovo! May the commemoration of the living be memorable for them!", wrote the head of the government.
"When I saw the bodies of the girls and their mother, it was clear that they had run away and tried to hide under the bushes. I realized that those men had been looking for them and had shot them with guns where they found them. There were other family members killed around. It was clear that they had tried to crawl through the forest to escape. I was shocked by the brutality, the hatred...”
This is how the witness journalist, Wade Goddard, who witnessed the first massacre in the Upper Drenas Abyss in front of the world with photographs, recalls.
On September 26, 1998, members of three Serbian police units and contingents of the Yugoslav Army entered the village. The members of the Deliu family were sheltering in the mountains. They shot them at close range and then mutilated their corpses.
The Abria massacre is one of the most cruel crimes of the Serbian genocide in Kosovo. No one has been punished for it.
That day they massacred 22 members of the Deliu family. The oldest was Fazli Deliu, 94 years old. The youngest, was deprived of life from the mother's womb. The pregnant flower was cut open with the unborn baby.
They also killed Mihane, along with her son, Mir. Mihane Gashani Deliu had his 28th birthday on September 25. Valmir Deliu had his second birthday on September 21.
Diturije Deliu, the baby who was found alive in the mother's chest with blood, did not survive. She died on November 19, 1998, on the way to the village of Tërdec, while being sent to a war doctor. He had only 95 days to live.
On September 26, 1998, Serbian armed forces also entered the village of Gollubovc in Malisheva. There they killed 13 Albanian men, unarmed civilians. After a few hours of torture, they laid them on the ground, with their hands behind their heads. They were executed by the police, one by one, with two bullets each. No one has been punished for these crimes.
On the 26th anniversary, we commemorate the 23 martyrs of the massacre in Upper Abri and the 13 martyrs killed in Gollubovc.
We commemorate Valdet Xhemajli, Vesel Demaku and Afrim Hajdaraj, who were martyred that day, protecting the civilian population.
We do not forget the fallen on the difficult path to liberation. We honor their memory by committing to the strengthening of our Republic.
Glory to all those who fell for the freedom of Kosovo! May the commemoration of the living be memorable for them!
