The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said his country has its own policies and interests and is not a servant of "neither Russia nor the United States".
During the speech at the General Assembly of the United Nations, Vucic said that his country respects the UN Charter and the territorial integrity of Ukraine, while he said that the countries do not respect resolution 1244 and the "territorial integrity of Serbia".
He repeated accusations against the West that it has disregarded the UN Charter when the then former Yugoslavia was bombed by NATO, bombings that led to the liberation of Kosovo.
"Everyone in the world talks about Ukraine, nobody dares to talk about Serbia, but even when they talk, they say how we will start the war in the Balkans under the orders of Russia. They lied all the time for over two and a half years. We are neither servants of Russia nor of the USA. We have our policies and our interests", said Vucic.
The authorities in Kosovo have accused Serbia of being an "extended hand of Russia" and that Moscow is trying to destabilize Kosovo through Serbia.
Serbia has good relations with Russia and is among the few countries in Europe that has not joined the EU sanctions against Moscow, for the launch of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In his speech, he spoke about Kosovo, whose independence Serbia does not recognize. He accused the Western countries of arming Kosovo, as he said that according to UN resolution 1244, the only armed forces in Kosovo are those of KFOR, the NATO peacekeeping mission.
"Those who committed aggression against Serbia, who tried to divide a part of its territory, still try to convince us that it is the only democratic and reasonable solution, that 'Kosovo and Metohija' is separated from Serbia. They have offered weapons on a daily basis to the so-called Kosovo Security Forces, which tomorrow will become the Albanian Armed Forces in the territory of Serbia", Vucic said.
In 2018, Kosovo approved the legal changes for the transformation of the KSF into the Army. This process is expected to end in 2028. The KSF is supported by various armed states, such as the United States and Turkey.
Vucic said that when asked on the basis of what international documents they provide such assistance to the KSF, he said that they receive "the most idiotic answer" that "we do not accept the UN Charter because the situation has changed because we have accepted the independence of Kosovo".
"Their message to us is: We have the power, we are God, we don't care about the UN, laws and UN resolutions. We can do whatever we want," said Vucic, asking the leaders present at the UN how Serbia should act.
Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia have been high since September 24, 2023, when a group of armed Serbs attacked the Kosovo Police in Banjska in Zvecan. A Kosovo policeman was killed during the attack. Meanwhile, in the clashes that followed, three Serbian attackers were killed.
Kosovo describes the attack as terrorist and blames Serbia for being behind it, but Belgrade denies having a hand in it.
Also recently, tensions have increased due to a series of decisions taken by the Government of Kosovo in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs.
In his speech, Vučić mentioned the ban on the use of the Serbian dinar for making payments in Kosovo, the closure of the facilities of the Post of Serbia, which he said puts "the lives of Serbs and other non-Albanian population" at risk, but also the ban on visits by officials. Serbs in Kosovo, including the Serbian patriarch.
Kosovo has been criticized by the international community for some decisions, such as the closure of some institutions in the north, which operated according to the Serbian system. The international community has described them as unilateral and uncoordinated actions.
"How can there be peace in Kosovo when the legal order and the fundamental rights of an entire nation are systematically undermined", claimed Vucic.
Vucic also said that his country remains committed to peace and the dialogue for the normalization of relations mediated by the European Union./ REL
