
The acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has expressed condolences to the family, colleagues and associates of Nexhad Daci.
He writes that the former speaker of the Kosovo Assembly "will remain an important name in the history of the country's state-building."
Kurti also said that it was sad to be informed of Daci's death, adding that Nexhat Daci was one of the main and most active figures in Kosovo politics.
"It is sad to announce that on this first day of 2026, Nexhat Daci, former Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo and former President of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts, has passed away.
Nexhat Daci was the first Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo after the liberation of 1999, elected twice as Speaker, between 2000 – 2004 and 2004 – 2006. He was one of the main and most active figures on the political scene in Kosovo between 2001 and 2011, when as a member of the Democratic League of Kosovo he was elected a deputy in the Assembly of Kosovo and then from 2007, as the founder and chairman of the Democratic League of Dardania party. As a member of the Presidency of the Assembly of Kosovo, Nexhat Daci was one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence of Kosovo, on 17 February 2008.
Nexhat Daci was born on July 26, 1944 in the village of Trnovec, Bujanovac. After completing secondary education in Leskoc, he studied chemistry at the University of Belgrade, where he defended his master's thesis in 1968. In 1973, Nexhat Daci received his doctorate from the University of Zagreb, and the following year, he completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. Since 1966, when he was elected assistant in the department of chemistry, he has lectured at the University of Prishtina, where in 1984 he was elected full professor.
From 1994, Nexhat Daci was elected a corresponding member and from 1996 a full member of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts, which he would lead twice as its president, between 1999 - 2004 and 2018 - 2019. Nexhat Daci is the author of many scientific papers and research works from various fields of chemistry.
