Trump's return brings trouble for Kosovo, Ambassador Hill predicts

The outgoing US Ambassador to Belgrade, Christopher Hill, said tonight that he does not rule out a change in US policy towards Serbia after the return of newly elected President Donald Trump to the White House and expressed his expectation that relations between the two countries will make further progress.

Before leaving Belgrade, Hill told RTS that he was optimistic about the future of US-Serbian relations.

" It's really hard to say (whether there will be a policy change). I think the incoming Trump administration, some of its staff, has experience working with Serbia, so I wouldn't rule out a change ," Hill said, Danas reports.

The American diplomat expressed confidence that the two countries will continue to improve relations and emphasized that today Serbia is able to agree with the US on many more things than before.

The American diplomat, who was ambassador to North Macedonia, Poland and South Korea, said he was very disappointed with the situation in Kosovo, while blaming Pristina for the lack of progress in the Brussels dialogue.

" Kosovo has had to do some things, such as protecting different peoples, including Serbs. I have to say that I find it very disappointing how far we have come in Kosovo. It is very clear that this is an unsatisfactory situation ," Hill said.

He expressed hope that there will be "greater effort" in the dialogue, saying that the European Union is trying hard and that there is a significant challenge ahead.

" I think many of us are very disappointed with the lack of progress in the Brussels dialogue. And many of the reasons for that failure, in my opinion, are on the side of the Kosovo government. It is up to us to support Europe and see if some progress can be made. But I am not satisfied with what has been achieved ," he said.

He added that he is optimistic that the Association of Serbian Municipalities, which was agreed upon in the Brussels Agreement in April 2013, will be established.
